Ranking Every HBO Drama Series From Worst To Best
14. My Brilliant Friend
For a network with the ambition and international appeal of HBO, adapting Elena Ferrante’s coming of age quadrilogy of novels is a no-brainer. The Neopolitan Quartet tells the stories of Elena and Raffaella, better known as Lenu and Lila, as they navigate the tough surroundings of their rundown neighbourhood just outside of Naples, and into the wider world which proves to be just as much of a challenge.
The success of the adaptation hinges entirely on the young actresses chosen to play the lead roles, and the four performers (two each per character as they transition out of childhood) have done an extraordinary job. There’s a built in quality to their friendship, a connection that feels strong even when they’re apart due to the history of their relationship.
My Brilliant Friend is a naturalistic and unflashy show, though beautifully shot, making use of the neighbourhood’s grizzled but captivating visuals. It’s not always an easy watch - Ferrante’s novels wade through some tough times, unflinchingly captured on screen. But this is the kind of character-led, honest and uncompromising TV we need more of.
