Ranking Every HBO Drama Series From Worst To Best
6. Succession
There’s a strong argument to be made that Jesse Armstrong’s Murdoch-aping family drama is the finest show on TV today. The tale of media giant Logan Roy and his decision to abdicate the throne is Shakespearean in influence and heft, in turn hilarious, cruel, and properly thrilling.
The conceit is right there in the title. With Logan Roy’s 80th birthday approaching, rumours abound that he’s about to step down as CEO of Waystar RoyCo. His kids, all damaged and devious in their own way, line up in the hope they’ll inherit the keys to the kingdom, and from there, we descend into darkness.
A show about the mega-rich, the 0.01%, Succession isn’t exactly brimming with likeable characters, but the writing and performance of the faultless cast makes the likes of Kendall Roy, the workaholic son with myriad personal problems, somehow relatable.
The third season is underway after the second ending with an all time great cliffhanger, and it shows no signs of dipping in quality. It’s made must see TV out of a bunch of billionaires squabbling over business - a strange, but undeniably impressive, achievement.
