Ranking Every HBO Miniseries From Worst To Best

31. The Undoing

I May Destroy You
HBO

The early days of The Undoing gave the impression of a series for the ages. Hugh Grant was arguably career best as the cold and cruel doctor Jonathan Fraser. Nicole Kidman continued her small screen excellence as his psychologist wife Grace. The first couple of episodes promised a grimy, salacious whodunnit with twists and turns to relish.

The show then proceeded to twist, turn, twist and turn again until the viewership was in knots. Before long it became clear that we were being fed dead ends and false leads, throwing out twists in lieu of character development.

It was splashy stuff, erratically paced and needlessly convoluted - at the same time it was quite a lot of fun, with the mystery at its core effectively retaining audience attention even as the characterisation became increasingly weak.

The rug pull at the end, without spoilers, divided the viewership, the ending proving to be unforgivable by a large portion of the audience. This was a weird show that ends a long way from where it began, but it’s certainly not boring.
