Ranking Every HBO Miniseries From Worst To Best

44. Tsunami: The Aftermath

I May Destroy You
HBO

HBO has based many of its series on real events, and at their best have produced heady docudramas that inform as well as entertain. It’s important when dealing with real lives to ensure an appropriate length of time has passed, and to refrain from being exploitative when the matter is particularly sensitive.

Due care was certainly not given to 2006’s Tsunami: The Aftermath, a misfire of a show that, in spite of a quality cast and no doubt good intentions, ended up somewhat classless. Not two years removed from the 2004 earthquake and tsunami that claimed almost a quarter of a million lives, the crew filmed in the actual locations, still showing signs of devastation.

What’s more, the series’ focus is almost entirely on westerners - British holiday makers, journalists, and diplomats. There are some token Thai sufferers thrown in, but they primarily serve to be rescued by the brave Brits.

The cast includes the likes of Tim Roth and Toni Collette, but they’re not given nearly enough to save this icky, reckless two-parter.
