Mortimer Smith Sr. is the grandson of fellow protagonist, alcoholic and reckless inventor, Rick Sanchez (both voiced by Justin Roiland).
The teenager is often forced to tag along on his grandfather's dangerous adventures, involving time travel, different dimensions and, on most occasions, some kind of death and destruction. The latter is usually down to Rick's selfish antics but Morty has demonstrated that he has a few flaws of his own.
For a start, Morty is very easily manipulated, hence being roped into the scientist's schemes. In addition to the hell Rick puts him through, Morty has inherited his cowardliness and overwhelming anxiety from his father, Jerry.
He does have some redeeming qualities though. Because of all the scrapes Rick gets them into, Morty is quick-witted and adapts fairly well to perilous situations and learns from them, despite being intellectual "challenged". He is by far the sociopath his grandfather is, showing compassion, good-nature and avoiding conflict and slaughter as much as possible.
