If you were to describe Ricky Gervais to anyone who hadn't seen him, if you were to suggest thirty minutes of television that best display the genius of the man, you couldn't go far wrong with the episode 'Training Day', from the first series of The Office. The episode centres around a guest speaker who becomes increasingly agitated with David Brent wanting to stick his nose in and co-conduct the training day. It starts off pretty harmless - Brent feels like he has to add in the mantra, "A good idea is a good idea... forever," as they're discussing how cheesy the video is - but escalates, as during the section about dealing with complaints, David, who's supposed to be playing a hotel customer getting nowhere with the staff, shouts, "I think there's been a rape up there!" Later, Brent gets his guitar from home to perform to the group, and the final straw comes when poor Rowan asks Brent, "What does that even mean?" as he babbles on about another saying. "Oooh... don't you know?" he replies, in typically Brent fashion. It's a hugely attention-seeking episode from David, as he constantly undermines the authority figure of the group. Gervais plays the part completely seriously, honestly believing that these people actually like him, and it makes for one of the funniest episodes of British comedy ever.
