Ricky Gervais, in case you haven't noticed, is an atheist. He was a Christian and loved attended church as a child until one day, his brother made a snide comment about it all not being real. Their mother shushed him, but it was too late. He lost his faith, as just a young boy. Religion surfaces often in Ricky's work, not least in The Invention of Lying, which slowly evolves from a quirky romcom into a comment about religion. In Extras though, Gervais's biggest statement on theism is made when he dates a girl who's Catholic. He turns up at a prayer meeting - hilariously dressed, it must be said - and there he digs himself into a hole, declaring his priest to be "Michael O'Flatley", before admitting that no, he's not actually religious. He just didn't want to upset anyone by saying that Heaven wasn't real. It's both funny and interesting; it provides an insight into Gervais's own beliefs, but it also looks at how he feels he should conduct himself as an atheist. It's also the episode with Kate Winslet; given that she was the brilliant one in the phone sex scene though, this moment gets the nod in this list.
