Ricky Gervais' 9 Best Roasts At Golden Globes 2020
4. The #MeToo Movement
The #metoo movement, an initiative that fights against sexual harassment and sexual assault has recently found its footing in Hollywood, largely accredited to the exploits of Harvey Weinstein. Its consequent re-emergence has had a large influence on Hollywood and has been the cause for many A-listers to stand up and speak out.
Gervais, referring to the room, claimed that it had "some of the most important TV and film executives in the world," and that all of them had "one thing in common". "They're all terrified of Ronan Farrow."
Ronan Farrow is an investigative journalist whose investigations have had a tremendous impact on shedding light on the entertainment business and its abuse of power. Gervais is clear in making the observation that had people been less afraid of confronting their past and speaking out, that the investigations could have started sooner. In turn, it allowed further abuse where otherwise it could have been prevented.
Gervais should sometimes be dealt some credit for being brave enough to point out some important issues in front of the people responsible. Perhaps he could handle it more delicately, but that's not his style.
