Riverdale Season 3 Finale: 8 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Survive The Night'

After giving us the closest it could get to a near-perfect episode, Riverdale only went and threw a rather troubling curveball when it jumped forward into the future for the episode's closing moments.

The eerie scene saw Archie, Veronica and Betty covered in blood as they stripped down to their underwear, standing over a fire as they promised to burn their clothes (and Jughead's blood-soaked beanie) and to never speak about what happened ever again.

Given that the episode had, for the most part, avoided clichés, this felt like somewhat of a step backwards. Bloody bodies, burning clothes and pacts to never speak of what happened are as tropey as you can get and, well, as you can see, this ticked all of those boxes.

Furthermore, it doesn't help that the scene was probably constructed in a vacuum to create a worthy cliffhanger, so there's a strong possibility that the writers themselves haven't fully figured out what's actually going to happen.

Admittedly, it does have the potential to be brilliant and could give the fourth season a How To Get Away With Murder vibe, but given that the story probably hasn't been fully mapped out yet, it risks ending up following in the footsteps of Arrow's awful 'Who's in the grave?' narrative.

Also, why does it always have to be Jughead who suffers some horrible fate? The character has had far too many near-death experiences for this to be a strong enough hook and, let's not even bother considering the possibility that he really is dead because that that would be a massive mistake.
