Scream: 12 WTF Moments From Episode 2

This episode introduces audiences to the hit true crime podcast Autopsy of a Crime, which is clearly supposed to be this show’s version of Serial but with a far less catchy name. A reporter named Piper Shay is doing a show about Nina’s murder investigation, covering it as it unfolds.

But was this murder investigation really interesting enough to already warrant her attention? All that’s happened so far is a girl was murdered and the police are pretty sure the boyfriend did it. Thrilling, right? Of course there’s the Brandon James angle, but by the time Piper arrives there's only been one murder, and there is absolutely no evidence available to the public to suggest any connection at all. Yet Piper refers to the town as having a “blood soaked history,” and perpetuates the idea that Brandon James might be back based on absolutely no information. 

This idea of introducing the true crime podcast is a cool direction to take the series in, and it's nice to have a Gale Weathers type character, but you’d expect Piper to be drawn in after a second murder when it becomes clear this is a really special case. Are there constantly episodes of Autopsy of a Crime where Piper shows up to investigate a murder only to discover the boyfriend did it and that’s it?
