Seinfeld: 10 Worst Things George Costanza Has Ever Done

9. Eating Garbage

Seinfeld George
Sony Pictures Television

The unfortunate thing about this instance is: George is actually trying to keep a relationship going, for once. The commitment-phobic Costanza is dating Lindsay, and actually enjoying himself. Things are getting serious enough that he’s invited to meet her mother, an interaction he boasts that he’s especially good at. This turns out to be true, and he charms Lindsay’s mother with his gentlemanly ways.

Then, he gets caught eating an eclair out of the garbage, and blows the whole thing. George equivocates, trying to convince anyone who’ll listen that the placement of the eclair (it was on a magazine) and the fact he knew - and was happy to kiss goodbye - the person who took the only bite, but his cards are marked from there.

George’s status only falls further in the episode, as Mrs. Enright later catches her daughter’s beau cleaning a car window with a newspaper, and later shirtless in their bathroom. Costanza truly is the victim of circumstances in “The Gymnast”. If only he could have resisted eating rubbish, who knows how happy he could have been?
