Seinfeld Quiz: Whose Job Was It?
Just what did the originator of Art Vandelay actually do anyway?
The 1990s were a strange time for sitcoms. During that pre-Millennium decade we saw plenty of seemingly wealthy twenty and thirty somethings who could live in expensive Manhattan apartments on our tv screens but they never actually seemed to be at work too often.
The debate on how Monica Geller could actually afford to live in her huge apartment in New York is legendary with her lack of a stable workplace (turns out her grandmother was illegally subletting it to her and it had rent control, apparently) but Seinfeld did a better job than most sitcoms of keeping us up to date on each character’s financial situations and believable resumes.
Sure, our four main characters spent more time goofing off and lounging around with each other and an inordinate amount of time in the diner together than what was probably humanely possible but they were often shown to be at work too.
Indeed for many seasons we literally saw Jerry Seinfeld at work doing his stand-up comedy routine and the amount of flip-flopping between jobs (and imaginary ones) we saw George Costanza do throughout the show was legendary (just what did Art Vandelay actually do anyway?). Only Elaine seemed to have a steady 9-5. How Kramer funded his life was a bit more of a mystery!
