Seinfeld: The Progressively Harder George Costanza Quiz
Can you remember the play George Costanza pretended he authored? Answers get harder as you go!
Jason Alexander probably had the toughest task of them all when he agreed to portray George Costanza in that infamous “show about nothing” Seinfeld.
George is clearly based both physically and personality wise on the sitcom's co-creator Larry David. Unlike the other co-creator Jerry Seinfeld, David had no interest in acting and thought the part of George needed a proper experienced thespian to portray the character and so Alexander was hired, and given the rather daunting task of portraying David’s cantankerous alter-ego.
Jerry basically played himself but Alexander had the tricky balance of trying to make George likeable enough despite his eccentricities, but also peculiar enough for the comedy to hit, without also offending Larry David who he was kind of impersonating.
In the end, Alexander did a magnificent job portraying George Costanza and it’s hard to imagine anyone doing a better job. Larry David was right... a proper actor was needed to portray his weirdness!
