The Groff family's relationship is incredibly tepid, even more so now that Maureen has left Michael. Still, many essential things need to happen for them, and this discussion between Adam and his father is one of the highest priorities.

While the concept of coming out to his father is daunting, outdated and irrelevant as Michael likely already knows - thanks to Adam's actions during the school play - it's more about what the discussion represents for them, as opposed to the act of coming out.

Adam and his father have one of the most toxic and undesirable relationships in the show, which has clearly led to many emotional problems for both of them. If Adam wants to move on with his life and truly find himself, he either needs to detach from this toxic presence or find a way to work with him, without compromising who he is.

In season three, Adam's story is likely to be his best, and finally confronting/reaching and understanding with his father is vital to making that prediction come true.
