Shannara TV Show: 8 Things Jon Favreau Should Consider

3. Incorporate The Word & Void Trilogy?

The Word And The Void What is interesting about the premise of the world presented in the Shannara novels, is that it is in fact a post-apocalyptic world, where magic has come into effect; races like dwarves have been created out of humanity living underground for centuries. In the early Shannara novels it is little more than implied that our world as we know existed prior to the Four Lands. In fact it is probably Walker Boh's journey in the second book in the 'Heritage' series 'The Druid Of Shannara' that begins to play on this story line, taking our hero to what is obviously a decimated city from our near future, the first blend of technology with the magic that inhabits this world. Terry Brook's 'The Word & Void' trilogy is quite different; set instead in Illinois in the US of our time, where the two heroes John and Nest encounter magic. Obviously such an adaption would be massively different from the Shannara novels; it is only in the 'Genesis of Shannara' trilogy, written many years later, that links the events of The Word & Void' to the original Shannara trilogy by focusing on the apocalyptic 'Great Wars'. Now I can't imagine that 'The Word & Void' would come into play any time soon. There are many shows out there already that focus on the mix of real world and supernatural. Haven. Buffy The Vampire Slayer before it. And of course Supernatural itself, currently in its ninth season. But should the Shannara series be successful, bringing a Lord of The Rings-style high fantasy to television screens, then the Word & Void could serve as an interesting and very accessible prequel spin-off series, linking both eras together.
