Sherlock: 10 Ingenious Things About Series 3

10. Retaining The Mystery

Mystery is what motivates Mr Holmes; he's a detective because he loves it and he revels in the unknown. Likewise, it's just as fascinating to us viewers. So it seems only right that we'll never know for certain exactly how Sherlock faked his own death. We were given an explanation, but before the pedantic Cumbercollective could join together for a choral, "But what about...?" Anderson questioned the theory for us. One of television's biggest questions is still, sort of, unanswered; there's great poetry in that. And it's extremely Sherlockian for him to let his guard down in 'The Sign of Three', warm up and tell us how he's becoming capable of love, before turning to heroin in 'His Last Vow', and shooting a man in cold blood. Sherlock Holmes is still, and probably always will be, the greatest mystery of this show. Elementary, really.
