Sherlock: 10 Most Hated Episodes

7. His Last Vow

Sherlock The Final Problem
BBC

Did you find the "I don't shave for Sherlock Holmes." "You should put that on a t-shirt." joke hilarious in the Season Three premiere? Well, they repeat that joke again for the season finale, only this time it's a different slogan and it's Charles Augustus Magnussen saying the t-shirt line instead of John's wife. How Magnussen would even know that conversation between John and Mary is beyond us, but the show seems to expect us to believe Mary and Magnussen somehow both thought of the same joke in response to a line said by John.

Forced comedy? Incredibly. The number of times that phrase gets repeated throughout this list should tell you just how big of a problem it is when it comes to the latter half of Sherlock. While this episode is notable for being the only one in Season Three with an actual proper focused-on mystery, it isn't helped by Charles Augustus Magnussen just being a boring, generic, and unimpressive villain, certainly no match with Moriarty who was a worthy foe for Sherlock.

This outing also features a pretty dumb twist with John's wife Mary being exposed as a secret agent, which doesn't even contribute anything of importance to the plot considering how she's immediately forgiven a few scenes later — it just feels like twists for twists' sake. His Last Vow is a messy, nonsensical, and ultimately anti-climatic episode, resulting in a disappointing finale for a disappointing season.
