Sherlock: 20 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References

18. Sherlock's Bedroom

The easter eggs in Sherlock aren€™t always in the dialogue, however, as sometimes they sneak in subtle visual references that can easily be overlooked.

In A Scandal In Belgravia, we get a glimpse into Sherlock€™s bedroom and, if you watch the scene in slow motion and squint a bit, you can spot a couple of nods to the Canon hanging on the walls. Most noticeably, there is a periodic table €“ just generally reflecting his love of chemistry €“ as well as a judo certificate and a portrait of Edgar Allen Poe.

The Poe portrait is presumably a reference to his status as the father of the detective story and as an inspiration for Conan Doyle. The judo certificate, meanwhile, refers to the fact that Doyle€™s Holmes is an expert martial artist, using the invented art of €˜Baritsu€™ in his fight against Professor Moriarty atop the Reichenbach Falls. This is also alluded to in The Empty Hearse when Sherlock said one of his plans for escaping the roof of St Barts involved a €œsystem of Japanese wrestling€€
