13. Sherlock In Love?

Probably one of the nastiest things Sherlock has ever done is dating €“ and proposing €“ to Janine just to get an advantage on her boss Magnussen. This might seem like exactly the sort of audacious thing that only Cumberbatch€™s Sherlock would do but actually it is lifted straight from the Canon.

In the story Charles Augustus Milverton, a disguised Holmes gets engaged to Milverton€™s maid, to gain access to his house. Watson is naturally outraged at Holmes€™ behaviour but Sherlock says how it will turn out all right as there is another man who is interested in her who can take his place. Yeah, who cares what the woman herself thinks!

In Sherlock, Janine makes a fortune for selling her story to the press and moves to a Sussex cottage. In the Canon, Holmes retires to, guess what, a Sussex cottage. Perhaps there is a future for Sherlock and Janine, after all...
