4. What About The Supporting Cast?

I've already made the point that Sherlock's character arc is complete and so there wouldn't be much point in continuing the show if he has nowhere to go on an emotional level. However, that's not to say the rest of the cast have had their story arcs wrapped up. In fact, if Sherlock was to end after season four it would be doing its supporting characters a major disservice.

To be fair, there was clearly some sort of attempt to give at least two of the characters a last hurrah in this season. In The Final Problem, Lestrade harked back to a line he said in the pilot episode when he called Sherlock a "good man." Likewise, Mrs Hudson got some of her best ever moments this season (e.g. that awesome Aston Martin scene).

However, these characters still have a lot more to give to the show. In particular, Molly Hooper really needs some closure for her long-running unrequited love for Sherlock. In The Final Problem, there was a heartbreaking scene where she was forced to admit her feelings. It's a moment that must have torn her apart but the episode offered no resolution for it.

The fans have invested too much time into these characters for them to disappear from our screens without a proper sign-off.
