Sherlock Season 4: 18 Easter Eggs & References From 'The Lying Detective'

3. Eurus Holmes

So what kind of name is Eurus (or perhaps Euros) Holmes?

Well, like she says in the episode, it's Greek. More than that, it's the name of a Greek God. Eurus was the god of bad luck and rain. Both are relevant in a Sherlock sense as things look to be very bad for our heroes in next week's finale. Eurus' connection to rain, meanwhile, could have been referenced in the enigmatic promo for season four which featured a flooded Baker Street.

Interestingly, the sign of Eurus is an upside-down vase. Given that, it can't have been a coincidence that Sherlock turns a vase upside down and drinks from it in one scene this episode.

Moffat and Gatiss' inspiration for the name could have been Euros Lyn, a one-time Sherlock director responsible for season one's The Blind Banker. The pair would also know the Welsh director from his work on Doctor Who.
