Sherlock Series 4: 8 Huge Predictions (And Why They Need To Happen)

4. We're Going To Delve Into Sherlock's Past

Sherlock Mary Watson
BBC

If Mycroft isn't long for this world, it'd be the perfect opportunity to delve into Sherlock's past. At this point it's inevitable: such a huge deal has been made of Sherlock's emotionally stunted character that it's surely being set-up for an explanation.

While generally Sherlock works better as an enigma, the show has been steering into more character-based territory. Though it's honestly getting a bit much, exploring the character of Sherlock at least makes sense given how his name is literally the show's title. Much more has been made of Sherlock's reluctance to enter into a heterosexual romantic relationship, for example, than in the source material, and it feels like we're circling some actual back story for Sherlock.

Delving into Sherlock's past would be interesting for a bunch of reasons: for a start, the show genuinely seems to be suggesting that it's unique, and three series in jokes about Sherlock's personality are getting tired. If the show insists on courting character-driven material, let's at least make it about the main character.
