The Simpsons Movie was a delightful mixture of the emotional balance in the show's early run as well as the more mature comedy of its later years. The most heartbreaking part of the film comes when Homer stubbornly disagrees to help save Springfield from destruction, instead choosing to stay in the safety of Alaska. Homer leaves their cabin in a rage but returns to find the family gone, a videotape lying on his bed. The tape shows Marge telling Homer that she is taking the kids to save the town and will never see him again. The real kicker is Marge's final line of the scene: "to prove to myself that this is the end... I taped this over our wedding video." The video then cuts to young Marge and Homer's first wedding dance, the song "Close to You" (a theme of the couple's since season 2) playing in the background. Throughout the series Marge and Homer have had their share of fights, but this moment shows an all-time low point for the couple, and it hurts to watch.
