The Simpsons: 12 Shockingly Depressing Character Backstories

5. The Crazy Cat Lady

20th Century Fox20th Century FoxThe backstory of Crazy Cat Lady, formerly Dr Eleanor Abernathy MD JD, is an extremely depressing tale. The archetypal feminist, a younger Eleanor took it upon herself to get a medicine degree from Harvard before getting a diploma in law from Yale as we learn in €˜Springfield Up€™. She didn€™t do this because of a love of law and medicine but rather because she wanted to prove that €œa woman can do anything€. All this intellectual strain eventually became too much and Eleanor eventually turned to alcohol before becoming obsessed with the cats which she has become named after in more recent years. It is a massive tragedy that such a great mind has been reduced to the raving mess that prowls the streets of Springfield. In the Crazy Cat Lady€™s first appearance, Lisa €“ ever the diplomat €“ questions whether anyone who appears to love animals so much can truly be crazy. Eleanor answers this question by chasing after Lisa using her precious cats as projectiles to hurl at the eldest Simpson daughter. It is deeply depressing that someone who had so much to offer was conquered by alcoholism and mental illness. She makes her distant relative the drug-addled Otto look veritably sane.
