The Simpsons: 20 Greatest Songs In The Show's History

4. Lisa's Union Strike Folk Song

Episode: Last Exit To Springfield A workers' strike at the nuclear plant, pitting the witless Homer against the machinations of Mr Burns, is the perfect backdrop for Lisa's finest musical moment. Sitting forlornly beside the protesters, she strums her song of solidarity on an acoustic guitar €“ and what a brilliantly haunting song it is. 'So we'll march day and night/ By the big cooling tower/ They have the plant but we have the power''. Seriously, just try making your way through to the end without feeling a chill down your spine. In fact, just as the song draws to a close, Lenny's request to ''Now do 'Classical Gas'!'' comes as some much-needed comic relief.

3. Dr Zaius

Episode: A Fish Called Selma Having had his acting career curtailed by ugly rumours, Troy McClure is desperate to return to the limelight. If that means dating Selma and staging a comeback in a production called 'Stop The Planet of the Apes, I Want to Get Off' then so be it. The show is as awful (or awfully good, depending on your proclivity for break-dancing primates) as its title would have you believe. It involves a chorus line singing Dr Zaius' name to the tune of Falco's 'Rock Me Amadeus', cheap music-hall gags and the original film's plot twist revealed to precious little fanfare. It's a melange of wooden delivery and wild overacting. Not that I'm complaining, of course. It'd make a fantastic double-bill with 'You're Checkin' In.' And no matter how many times you hear the lines ''I hate every chimp I see/ From chimpan-A to chimpan-Z',' you really have to stand back and marvel at their inane brilliance.
