What else? The bizarre, insensitive death of Maude Flanders, perhaps the only truly "nice" person in the whole of Springfield, sent shockwaves through The Simpsons fanbase. Not only was Maude's untimely death played as the butt of a joke concerning a t-shirt canon, it was actually done with the intention of increasing ratings. Other sore points include the fact that Homer was partly responsible, and the idea that Ned - her husband - starts dating new people in the very same episode. Talk about coldheartedness. Geez.
