The competition has been going downhill for years anyway. Season six's A Star Is Burns features a rare crossover, in this case with Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz) of The Critic. Despite the fact that The Critic itself was quickly cancelled and is barely remembered as a series, this particular episode is one of The Simpsons' best. Featuring a film festival judged by Marge, Jay Sherman, and Homer, it has Barney's moving depiction of his alcoholism, a man getting hit with a football in the groin, and Mr. Burns hiring a Mexican version of Spielberg to direct his life story. When Burns' film fails to sway the jury, he does everything he can to win something - and apparently snags the Miss Teen America crown.
