We all love The Simpsons, and we've all got our own favourite character lists. Mine's a clichéd one - Homer at number 1 closely followed by Principle Skinner. No sitcom in history has come remotely close to the Simpsons in terms of its vast number of recurring characters - pause that sequence from the Simpsons Movie in which the citizens of Springfield march on the Simpson home in anger, and you could recall every single one of those characters' backstories - the cast really is that big. Alternatively, take a look at the above poster which shows hundreds of characters from the show's history, and you can see it barely scratches the surface. So there's the family, their friends and neighbours and then there are the one-off guest stars from the real world that seldom show up again. But how about the 'punchline' characters? Those that only turn up for a few seconds to serve as a sight gag and then never return? Who are they, exactly? With this article I shall attempt to unravel the mysteries of these elusive Springfielders, and find out if, ultimately, the article was worth the time it took me to write in the first place.
