At the beginning of season two, Ethan Zobelle came to Charming with a view to crumble the Sons of Anarchy's entire operation. After his wife was killed three years prior, he took a stand against clubs like SAMCRO and made it his business to clean the streets.

In order to do that however, he had to get his own hands dirty. He flooded the streets of Charming with drugs and prostitutes, caught SAMCRO blowing up Darby's operation, and gave Hale the ammo to shut them down completely. However, even the Deputy Police Chief could see that the Sons were the lesser of the two evils.

Though he didn't necessarily hold to their values, Zobelle formed a partnership and empowered the white supremacists of the League of American Nationalists. It was he who ordered the attack on Gemma, and even got his own daughter to help make it happen, and he almost killed Chibs with a car bomb that could have killed absolutely anybody even associated with the Sons.

All of this came along with the intolerable smugness and arrogance he afforded himself, knowing that as an FBI informant, he was untouchable. What made things even worse is that before Clay was able to get his hands on the man who ordered the rape of his wife, Abel was kidnapped, leaving Zobelle to escape Charming unscathed. This gave fans no closure, and arguably made him even more hateful.
