1. Braga's Year of Hell/Enterprise Season 1
For Trek fans, Brannon Braga was for years considered to be part of the unholy duo of B&B (Berman and Braga), responsible for running Trek into the ground prior to the Abrams reboot. Those opinions might be in need of reevaluation, as the two long time Trek producers open up about their participation on Trek. In particular, Bragas characterization as a hack writer falls apart when you learn that he pitched two radical ideas for Voyager and Enterprise. The first was to devote an entire season to a Year of Hell story arc, where Voyager was under constant attack by the Krenim, a hostile race with temporal weapons. The second was to make Enterprises first season be about the completion of Earths first starship after a Klingon attack, with the Enterprise only reaching orbit in the season finale. So why did we wind up with a Year of Hell two parter and a TNG-lite first season of Enterprise?
According to Brannon Braga, the network (UPN) wanted the ship visiting aliens of the week format, because they thought the fans wanted that from Star Trek. So they forced the writers to stick to that formula until it was clear that people were tired of it (hence the whole Xindi plot in season 3). And by the time the writers were let off the leash, it was too late to fix all the damage that had been done. Would we be praising Voyager for Year of Hell or Bragas first season of Enterprise? Its impossible to tell. But at least wed respect them for trying something creatively ambitious, even if the execution wasnt all there all. Feel free to drop your thoughts and any unproduced Trek projects I missed in the comments blelow.
