Star Trek: 10 Awesome-Sounding Projects That Never Got Made

3. Janeway on Trial

Captain Janeway with a gun Trek has a history of putting characters on the spot in court room episodes, from Kirk and Spock in TOS€™s Court Martial and The Menagerie, to Data and Picard in TNG€™s The Measure of a Man and The Drumhead, to Dax and Worf in DS9€™s Dax and Rules of Engagement. So it should come as no surprise that a trial episode was pitched for Voyager by Ron Moore, putting Janeway on trial by the crew as a possible follow up to Equinox. It would€™ve asked serious questions about how Voyager was being run and its adherence to Starfleet rules while they were stranded decades away from authority, taking the show back to the core conflict that was supposed to distinguish it from its predecessors. Unfortunately, Ron Moore was dissatisfied with the work environment on Voyager, especially the attitude toward continuity and using technobabble as filler when scripts ran short. As one of the few writers willing to stand up for risky ideas on the Voyager staff, especially when it came to the portrayal of Janeway, his departure guaranteed the demise of this promising story. Perhaps it€™s just as well that the episode was never made €“ a reset button ending would€™ve ruined it.
