Star Trek: 10 Best Ferengi Episodes
9. Deep Space Nine: The Dogs Of War
One of the last episodes of Deep Space Nine was, in many ways, the last ride for the Ferengi in Star Trek. It tied up the ark of the Ferengi who had been featured throughout the series, and was also the final time the species appeared with any prominence in the world of Star Trek.
Grand Nagus Zek, the incredibly old leader of the Ferengi, used and manipulated Quark at every turn. But you don't become the leader of the Ferengi people without the lobes for business and using everyone around you to gain the most profit. Zek became a fixture on the series, one of the regular recurring Ferengi to show up on DS9.
Over several years, Zek forged a relationship with Quark's mother, Ishka. Her influence has caused Zek to implement several changes to Ferengi society, such as universal healthcare, equal rights for women, retirement pensions and a Congress of Economic Advisors who were a new check on the power of the Grand Nagus. With Quark believing he was to be the successor to Zek, he thought he was going to have to deal with this new Ferengi.
In reality, it was Quark's brother Rom who would be named the new Grand Nagus. Unlike Quark, he had no passion for business nor did he seeks profit. He was working for the Bajorans on DS9 as an engineer. As such, he was the perfect person to head up this new reality for the Ferengi. It was an amazing episode as it laid out a clear path for the evolution of their culture.
