In 1986, Doctor Gillian Taylor, marine biologist and assistant director of the Cetacean Institute in San Francisco, was contacted by James T. Kirk and the former crew of the USS Enterprise about the institute's Humpback Whales, George and Gracie.

Kirk and his crew had traveled back in time in their stolen Klingon ship, the Bounty, to save Earth from a powerful alien space probe. Spock had discovered that the probe was trying to contact its good buddies, humpback whales. Unfortunately, Humpbacks were extinct in the 23rd century.

While Kirk could have taken whales from the wild, he preferred George and Gracie since Spock had discovered through a mind meld that Gracie was pregnant.

Taylor agreed to aid Kirk but unfortunately, due to budget constraints, the Institute was forced to return the whales to the wild. As Kirk prepared to depart for the whales' last known location, Taylor jumped into his arms as he beamed aboard the Bounty.

She explained that without the whales, she had no reason to stay in San Francisco and that the 23rd Century probably needed a whale expert. In the 23rd Century, she joined a science vessel so she could catch-up on 300 years of biology.
