Star Trek: 10 Devices That Every Starfleet Ship Has

1. Warp Core

As mentioned earlier, because of Einstein's theory of relativity, no object can accelerate faster than light by normal means. Starfleet's solution to this problem is to bend the space in between two places, similar to a wormhole, rather than simply going faster and causing severe time dilation.

The ship's Warp Core (created by Zefram Cochrane in 2063) expands space behind the ship and contracts space in front of it. This effect allows the ship to sail on a wave of folded spacetime while, inside the warp bubble, time moves at the same speed as the rest of the universe because the ship itself is not actually moving, but the space around it is.

Warp travel may very well be the only real-world way that humanity could one day travel faster than light, as it doesn't break any of our established laws of physics, just sorta bends them. Unfortunately Starfleet's warp cores are powered by antimatter, which, at the moment, can only be produced at the CERN facility in Switzerland at about £47 trillion per gram.
