Star Trek: 10 Reasons Enterprise Totally Sucked

4. That Goddamn Theme Song

entsucks10 The bane of my existence. Here's the deal (Full Disclosure pt. III): being a mere 10 years old when this series premiered, britpop and post grunge were hugely influential on me, and I used to be a huge fan of this theme song. Hell, to this day, the Verve's Urban Hymns is one of my favorite albums and I can still listen to the Calling unironically. But I grew in taste. I understood where musical tastes and moods came from. I am a Music Director of one of the larger college radio stations. I can tell when something is merely a facsimile of another. This is one such occasion. I can't remember a single series with lyrics that had an enjoyable theme song. The single best sci-fi series to air this last decade, Firefly, had awful lyrics. I can't see the 2000's genre prototype being any different, but there's something extrordinarily gimmicky about it too. Like I said earlier, Enterprise wanted that precious youth market, so they came in with an overproduced, cynical cash-in song. If there's an upside to this, the song represented a pale attempt by Berman and Braga to drag Star Trek into the 21st century. However, Paramount wanted to drag the series back to the 1960s while trying to impress with flashy new effects. The results are, as expected, insipid.
