5. It Would Be Set In The 20th Century
Time travel aside, as a science fiction series exploring space, Star Trek is understandably set in the future. Adding another twist to the standard setup of previous Star Trek series therefore, any Eugenics Wars series would have to take place in the past; Trek history has already established that the Wars themselves took place between 1992 and 1996. Considering any TV series would also no doubt also explore the events leading up to them, that's a fair chunk of living memory to retell. Rather than adopting a Life On Mars/Ashes To Ashes style nostalgia trip however, it's not a bad presumption that a Eugenics Wars series would instead take a look at the darker side of things that many people would rather not dwell on. It's easy to forget just how much of a tyrant Khan was back in the day, and although I'm sure they wouldn't be used casually, you can expect more Rwandan genocide and Sri Lankan civil war, and less Spice Girls on cassette. It would be this combination of intertwining Star Trek's fictional history into our own that would make the show so appealing. It's not just Fox Mulder who enjoys a good cover up and conspiracy theory, and splicing Cumberbatch's Khan into TV news footage would be a damn site more gripping than Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. It would also be interesting to see how such an iconic figure as Khan escaped our attention. Secret Identity? Illuminati? Making the series even more relevant, maybe Khan's status as "absolute ruler" wasn't as a dictator, but Wall Street banker or media mogul. Either way, setting a series this far back in Star Trek's history would also have another added bonus...
