Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of Enterprise NX-01 You Need To Know

Despite the deliberate attempts to make the NX-01 less advanced than the USS Enterprise of The Original Series, Doug Drexler attempted to sneak in as many elements from the classic Enterprise as possible. Some of the details calling back to Matt Jefferies' 1960s starship included the glowing dome bussard collectors and half-spheres at the ends of the warp nacelles.

According to Doug, this resulted in (intentional?) anatomical qualities in the NX-01's warp engines:

On the original Enterprise, the ends of the nacelles with their hooded cones suggested exhaust. That was remedied by adding spheres... I kept that for the ends of the NX nacelles, but split the sphere in two... If the fronts of the nacelles look like penises, I compounded that by making the ends of the NX nacelles look like a girls butt in a thong. I thought that was fair.
