Despite all the liberties taken in updating Pike's Enterprise for the Discovery era, the art department went to great lengths to add touches to the interiors that were straight out of TOS, including sourcing accurate recreations of the 1960s "jelly bean" buttons that were prominently featured in the original sets.

Turning to the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour in Ticonderoga, New York, Star Trek: Discovery's production team was loaned the exhibit's spare buttons, though the buttons ultimately went unused. According to set director Peter Nicolakokos:

The colors were perfect, but our buttons had to fit into precut slots on our consoles and these didn't quite fit so we recast them. It was fun. I love that buttons look as good as they did on the original Enterprise.

Color was actually a huge concern in the creation of the new Enterprise interiors, compounded by Philippa Georgiou's line upon seeing the retro bridge in "Such Sweet Sorrow": "Orange, really?" According to Tamara Deverell, this line presented issues:

I was going crazy was that orange red thing!… I'm telling you, if you look at TOS, which I've done for hours, sometimes it's orange, sometimes red.

She added:

So I went to the writers and told them that Michelle's line made me uncomfortable. In response, Alex sent me a note that said "This is why we love you, Tamara. It'll be okay. We're going to say 'orange'. Don't worry.
