Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The Borg Cube You Need To Know
6. Articuno
So the Borg cube has appeared thirty times in the Star Trek Universe, from its debut in 1989's "Q Who" all the way up through appearances in both 2020 series Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks (the opening titles at least).
But this number is actually more like 30.5 times.
In the Star Trek: Enterprise season two episode "Regeneration", revived Borg corpses left over from Star Trek: First Contact's time travel shenanigans take over an Earth vessel called Arctic One, assimilating the crew and taking off for the Delta Quadrant. Encountering the ship in deep space, Archer and the crew of the NX-01 discover that the Borg have not only assimilated the scientists who manned the ship, but they're also transforming the vehicle itself.
According to designer John Eaves, while Arctic One in its original configuration was basically a "stylized snow mobile", the assimilated ship was actually transforming into a Borg cube:
My job on this one was to create an Arctic exploration vessel that makes the discovery and later becomes Borgified. The first sketch is high profile vessel that I thought when "Borged" could form a cube.
The "Borged" Arctic One as it appeared in "Regeneration" does subtly change over the course of the episode, somehow adding mass and reshaping itself into a vaguely cube-like configuration – before being destroyed by Archer, Reed, and some well-placed bombs before it could take on its final cubical form.
