Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The Enterprise Uniforms

During the preproduction process on Enterprise, numerous prototype uniforms were created by the Star Trek costume department. Each prototype was ostensibly tailored from a different material and colored with different dyes. These variants included several shades of blue and, amazingly, a fully denim Starfleet uniform.

While a jean Starfleet spacesuit would've been kind of awesome, the designers ultimately landed on a custom dyed navy blue jumpsuit, adorned with Wendy Drapanas' stitched NX-01 mission patch, paired with black boots, a black button up undershirt, and (occasionally) an NX-01 baseball cap.

However, either due to a fluke of lighting or the dye itself, those dark blue uniforms actually ended up appearing closer to purple on screen.

To correct for this, new, bright blue jumpsuits were created for season two (after the production of "Carbon Creek", which was filmed first but aired second). The bright blue uniforms would ultimately continue to evolve into the vibrant dark blue that became the standard uniform in seasons three and four. Still, background actors can be seen wearing the first season purple-ish uniforms throughout the course of the series, because Star Trek does not waste its stuff.
