Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The Enterprise Uniforms
4. Starfleet Issue Skivvies
Neither co-creators Rick Berman and Brannon Braga or costume designer Robert Blackman have been shy about the fact that Enterprise was intended to be sexier than its Trek predecessors. Whether it's the formfitting Starfleet jumpsuits or T'Pol's even more formfitting Vulcan uniform (more on both those in a bit), it's clear sex appeal was a driving force behind many behind-the-scenes decisions.
As such, the show got its sexy young cast nearly-naked as soon as it could, featuring a decontamination chamber strip tease in the very first episode. In-universe, the decon chamber actually made sense; without the use of the transporter to filter out alien contaminants, Starfleet of the 22nd century relied on its officers slathering each other in lube – err, decontamination gel – after each mission.
Being on UPN at the time, Enterprise couldn't really show Archer or Trip or T'Pol fully naked (at least not until the infamous butt shot in season three's "Harbinger"), so the producers chose the next best thing: Starfleet issues skivvies.
Rather than create Enterprise's underwear from scratch like most of the clothing used in the series, Robert Blackman and the costume department turned to a modern day source: The local mall. The distinctive blue boxer briefs, tank tops, and support bras worn by the Enterprise crew were, in fact, off the shelf DKNY Flex Line underwear.
Apparently the production bought so many packs of these underwear that they had some left over at the end of the series, auctioning them off in 2008 as part of the It's A Wrap! sale and auction for a cool $200. Unworn, of course.
