4. Upgrades And Downgrades
Following the (as Adam Clery would say) WHOOOOOPIN the USS Enterprise receives during the events of Star Trek Into Darkness, the ship was given a year-long overhaul before her five-year mission could commence.
It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it detail, but the very last shot in Star Trek Into Darkness features the "refit" Enterprise's new impulse deck – which has been modified from two impulse engines to one larger unit. At some point in the intervening years after Into Darkness, though, the Enterprise would undergo an even more dramatic evolution.
For her appearance in Star Trek Beyond, the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise was redesigned to appear more stately and, ultimately, more vulnerable. The modifications were made at the request of director Justin Lin to emphasize the structural weaknesses Lin thought were inherent to the Enterprise's design.
Concept designer Sean Hargreaves was responsible for these changes, using the opportunity to adjust the ship's proportions from its earlier appearances which he believed were incorrect. Hargreaves' redesign included elongating and thinning-out the ship's neck, stretching the warp nacelle pylons, and significantly reducing the size of the engines themselves.
