Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Excelsior

2. Tuvok's Rusty Memory

Due to the accidentally permanent nature of the Excelsior model's transformation into the Enteprise-B for Star Trek Generations, a new miniature was constructed by veteran model maker Gregory Jein for Star Trek: Voyager's Star Trek 30th Anniversary episode, "Flashback" – which told the story of a young Ensign Tuvok serving aboard the USS Excelsior during the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

While the Voyager production team did its best to make "Flashback" consistent with The Undiscovered Country (the addition of Tuvok aside), the second Excelsior model was actually half the size of the original ILM miniature, slightly skinnier in appearance, and featured additional lighting in her warp nacelles. Along with changes made to the Excelsior bridge set due to budgetary and time constraints, this meant that the "Flashback" Excelsior was distinctly different from its movie counterpart.

Strangely, the episode also featured the death of one of the Excelsior's crew, Lieutenant Dimitri Valtane, despite Valtane appearing alive and well after the events of "Flashback" in the final moments of The Undiscovered Country.

Ultimately this is just one of those cases where storytelling overrode consistency, but since "Flashback" dealt with Tuvok suffering from a memory virus, it's possible he just remembered his time on the Excelsior incorrectly.
