Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Kelvin You Need To Know
6. Win Win Scenario
Fitting that the production crew used their time on the set of the USS Kelvin as a crash course for shooting a Star Trek feature film, the future, fictional crew of the USS Enterprise actually used the Kelvin to train for their own space mission.
Okay, to explain:
While Star Trek (2009) had a much larger budget than previous Star Trek movies and was produced by some of Hollywood's best and brightest, some cost saving measures were still required to bring the epic scope of the film to the screen. In grand Star Trek tradition, the bridge of the USS Kelvin was redressed to serve as yet another bridge, the setting for the famed Kobayashi Maru simulation.
Like countless Star Trek bridges before it, the Kelvin bridge set was repainted, given new graphic displays, and re-lit to become the Kobayashi Maru simulator, or "USS Trainer" as stated in the shooting script.
