Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The USS Kelvin You Need To Know
4. Under Construction
Initially slated for a Christmas 2008 release, Star Trek was pushed back nearly six months after successful test screenings indicated the film would enjoy higher box office returns during the summer season. As a result, Star Trek enjoyed an unusually long and fruitful marketing campaign, kicking off with the mysterious promotional website, NCC-1701.com.
Designed to be an in-universe look at Starfleet's Iowa Shipyard, the website offered webcam like views of the new Enterprise under construction, taken straight from the movie's January 2008 teaser trailer. Patient visitors to the website, though, were also treated to a "secret" image from the film that would periodically appear, showing a view of a corridor aboard the Enterprise.
...Except not.
Though it was framed as though this dark, static-y corridor was located aboard the new Enterprise, it was in fact a set built for the USS Kelvin's interiors, appearing briefly behind George Kirk and Captain Robau during the opening moments of the film. As we had yet to see any other marketing material for the film, this low-res image of the Kelvin was actually our first look at the inside of a Federation ship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended its run two years earlier.
