Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Benjamin Sisko
7. He's Not Picard
Deep Space Nine offered something new to the franchise in the form of its multitude of character and story arcs. Sisko was initially difficult to write for and even Avery Brooks considered leaving the show in its early seasons due to the material he was given.
Initial seasons attempted to focus on the Bajoran religious arc and position of the Emissary, however the arrival of the Dominion would alter Sisko's journey. This was represented in the arrival of the bald head, something the producers had avoided to differentiate Sisko from Picard.
In season two Sisko became more of a focus for the writers, with Michael Piller leading the charge. In The Deep Space Nine Companion, Ira Steven Behr envisaged Sisko as a builder who "stays with a project to the finish" while Picard was the explorer. going in, surveying and making way for those important second contacts.
