Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Harry Mudd

1. He Was The Only Recurring TOS Character Outside Of The Regulars

While Khan Noonien-Singh and Sarek would return in the Star Trek movies, Harcourt Fenton Mudd clocked up two more return appearances before the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This meant that Roger C Carmel was the only guest actor in the original series to play a character more than once. He's not the only recurring guest actor, of course. Mark Lenard, who played the Romulan Commander in Balance of Terror would return to play Spock's father.

Ricardo Montalban gave a fantastic performance as Khan who has gone down as one of the great Star Trek villains, and Wrath of Khan is something the franchise still tries to replicate. Roger C Carmel sadly died in 1986 at the age of 54, so never appeared in any of the subsequent Star Trek movies.

It's tempting to ponder Star Trek V as a big-screen epic based on the unmade Deep Mud script, though it may have ended up too similar to The Search For Spock's journey to the treacherous Genesis planet. Regardless, it's a testament to the performance that Carmel gives as Mudd that the character was brought back for three repeat appearances, including the abandoned Deep Mudd.
