Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Odo
1. Buckets And Beta
By the end of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Odo had no more use for his bucket, having rejoined his people in the Great Link. In the real world, René Auberjonois kept the receptacle after filming had ended, as the actor noted in 2013 in reply to a fan question on renefiles.com. "Whenever I get weary, I just slip into it for a little regeneration," Auberjonois added jokingly.
If you look closely enough during the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode Hear All, Trust Nothing, you'll see that, by 2381, Kira had the bucket in her office, formerly Sisko's, on Deep Space 9. Via the search for another bucket belonging to a rogue changeling aboard the Titan-A in Star Trek: Picard's No Win Scenario, we would also (briefly) see Odo's face again as an image on Captain Shaw's PADD. In the previous episode, Seventeen Seconds, Worf had already given a nod to Odo, and surely to René, his "close friend within the Link, a man of honour".
Aside from a carefully constructed, and lovingly nicknamed ("Jellyman"), holographic version of Odo in Star Trek: Prodigy's Kobayashi, set in 2383, that is about all we've seen and heard of the character since 2375 in (alpha) canon. Beta canon has expanded on the post-DS9 time period. Shortly before his death, Auberjonois notably voiced Odo in the 2018 Star Trek Online expansion Victory is Life.
In the game's 'Path to 2409,' Odo is already the Great Link's "Ambassador to the Solids" as of the mid-2380s. Then, in the mission 'Storm Clouds Gather,' Odo returns as representative of the Dominion to seek help from 'the Alliance' (of the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Republic) to combat the Hur'q.
Finally, when René Auberjonois passed away in December 2019, fans paid a moving tribute to him in game. As StarTrek.com reported, "hundreds [..] stood and held vigil in Odo's office," and an honour guard was posted on either side of the door.
Odo had meant everything all along.
