Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Q

8. His Reason For Choosing His Name Is Very Different

While we now know the real-world reason as to why Q has the name he does, there's one detail the previous entry leaves out, and that is Q's own personal explanation as to where his name comes from.

Nowadays, there's a very obvious explanation to this name, as all of the Q Continuum share it, and thus it makes total sense that that "our Q" also goes by it.

Though Q suggests that he and his people have always existed as they do now - implying they either always had that name or communally chose it - he has a line in the books that claims otherwise. In the Star Trek book The Buried Age, it appears as though the Q we know best made the name, as he says he chose it so that if anyone asked why he was named that he could say "because U will always be behind me".

It's not exactly groundbreaking lore, but it's hilarious to consider that this could very well still be the canon reason behind the name of an incredibly powerful race of beings.
