Star Trek: 11 Greatest Unfinished Story Ideas

6. The Probe That Could Talk To Whales (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) All Star Trek fans know this one by heart: alien probe of unknown design and origin; ships and starbases rendered powerless; a signal transmitted. Then vaporized oceans; devastating storms across the Earth; time Travel; humpback whales. Naturally, Kirk and company save the day, the probe goes back from where it came, and then the inevitable question: "where exactly did it come from?" While the probe's actions end up basically being a case of miscommunication, it did still nearly destroy the entire planet. And what would happen if this energy disrupting device fell into the hands of one of the nefarious races of the galaxy? It would have been a well placed coda at the end of the film if the characters made some mention of wanting to learn more about the probe, who created it, and why it was intent on contacting a highly intelligent aquatic species. Admittedly it would have been very unlikely for there to have been a direct film sequel to The Voyage Home. Nevertheless the probe's origin remains a rather large, yet fascinating, unanswered question in the Star Trek franchise.

I've been a huge sci-fi fan ever since going to see "Star Wars" at the tender age of 3 (and yes I actually do remember it! I love pretty much any intelligent and entertaining film and television series (some of my all time favorites are 2001, Lawrence of Arabia, Battlestar Galactica [SyFy], and The West Wing). Must thank the stars above for such things as HBOGO and Netflix (Am thoroughly enjoying Ripper Street btw). I've also been an avid comic book collector since childhood. I earned a bachelor's degree in creative writing with a second emphasis in film studies from Florida State University (Go Noles!) and definitely enjoy sitting back and watching pretty much any sports. I wish I had a joke to end with, but I don't so I'll simply say "The End."
